Harold R. Zick, President and the story of Greenup
I have lived in Houston since 1978 moving to League City in 1995. In May 1997, I married my wife, Susan, and moved to Friendswood. We have blended my two daughters with Susan’s daughter and son.

I attended Texas A&M in College Station and was in the Corp of Cadets during my four years. In my senior year, I was Executive Office of Company B1. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Turf Grass Management), Texas A&M 1973. I joined the Army after graduation as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army (October 1973-February 1975). Upon the completion of my service in the Army, I again enrolled at Texas A&M in College Station to pursue my graduate degree - Master of Agriculture (Turf Grass Management), and graduated in 1978.

While attending Texas A&M for my Masters Degree in 1977, I co-founded Greenkeeper Inc., providing fertilization and pesticide applications to lawns in Houston. In 1984, I branched out on my own to establish my current company, Greenup Inc., providing fertilization and pesticide application to lawns in Houston. This endeavor has been rewarding and I still enjoy coming to work every day.

Susan and I formed a unique partnership working to improve Greenup. Susan’s analysis of Greenup’s business led to her development of our current customized software system for the management of our customers, invoicing, and accounts receivables. She oversees Greenup’s software and continually updates the programming as our needs grow and change. We work in conjunction with blending my industry knowledge in turf grass management with her creativity in developing our website and internet Google advertising. She helped develop and manage large applications software for companies
such as Continental Airlines, SCI Corporation, and Lyondell- Citco Refining.

In May 2016, Greenup acquired the Houston lawn fertilization division of ABC Home and Commercial Services. Our daughter, Jennifer Manley, joined the company as Director of Operations. Jennifer has used her expertise in business management to successfully develop procedures for managing personnel and office operations.

With Jennifer on board since 2016, I have been able to focus on improving our chemical application and development of new application equipment. I believe that we must continue to change as the industry changes with how we impact the environment. We took a bold step 2 years ago to incorporate a product called ByoSpxtrum into our chemical applications. This product is a probiotic for the soil. In using this product with every application, we are greatly reducing our impact on the environment with having to use less fertilizer and pesticides as it helps the plants uptake the chemicals more efficiently.

Greenup has been an active member of the Better Business Bureau of Houston since 2010 and enjoy an A+ rating. We have won the Award of Excellence every year. We also regularly support the Houston Food Bank both through our company and personally. Susan and I have several charities we donate monthly including The Wounded Warrior Project and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Susan, Jennifer, and I have worked together to develop a family friendly work environment that values employees as an asset and considers them to be part of our family.
